The antivirus software vicious fight for supremacy resurfaces again in the news as a recent report gives it to Symantec, naming it as the North American Market Leader. In a report released by OPSWAT –“the industry leader in software management SDKs, interoperability certification and multiple-engine scanning solutions” which offers resources like OESIS Framework, “an open development framework that enables software engineers to develop products that manage thousands of third-party software applications, ” “Multi-scanning products including Metascan, MetaDefender for Media, and MetaDefender for Secure Access, ” Filterbit, “a free online tool powered by Metascan for scanning suspicious files” and AppRemover, a free utility that enables the complete uninstallation of antivirus applications.

Benny Czarny, CEO of OPSWAT commented that  “Free antivirus solutions remain the most popular; each of the top three antivirus products in North America is a free product,”  Maintaining its position from OPSWAT previous report, Avast emerged tops as the No1 global antivirus vendor with Avira and AVG improving their previous positions to come second and third respectively.

P2P applications also featured in the report with uTorrent, Ares and Emule emerging as the three global leaders  attracting the comment credited to Jeff Garon, Director of Marketing at OPSWAT, that “Our data shows that over half of the P2P market is controlled by the top three vendors, with uTorrent standing out as the top application by a wide margin.”

Operating systems featured an increase in Windows 7 usage in North America with a concomitant decrease in Vista and XP usage.
